Melting plot Idea

1 writer, 1 musician and 1 visual artist from the cities of Madrid, Turin and Vienna will be selected to participate in the Melting Plot.

6 events will be held, 2 in each participating city. Each artist will be involved in 2 events, in 2 different cities. The written texts (each around 25.000 characters) will be translated into the other languages of the project, plus English. A documentary DVD of the music and the visual art, plus a book containing the texts, will be published in the four languages as well.

The 9 artists selected for the project will be placed by the jury into groups of 3. Each ensemble will consist of a writer, a musician and a visual artist. Each participant in the group will be from a different one of the cities involved.

Together, the 3 artists will create and perform a unique story for the public, a “story” that through the international, cross-cultural and trans-regional inputs illuminates the multi-faceted nature of contemporary Europe. Europe has become a melting pot, and the Melting Plot project highlights and demonstrates this new cultural dynamic.

The events will take place in April, May and June 2013.

Several weeks before each event there will be a pre-meeting with the organizers and the 2 other participants in the group; one meeting in the home city of one of the artists in the group and one meeting in the second city where a performance will take place. The local artist of the ensemble will show the other 2 participants her/his city, which is hosting the event. Together the three artists will create a “story” inspired by the host city, a story that has a text, music and visual basis. Each Melting Plot agglomeration will be performed in the city that inspired it.

Through the Melting Plot process, the 3 artists will have the opportunity to work together with artists and people from various European cultures, experience different cities and languages, and finally, have the possibility of being discovered by an audience they would otherwise not reach.
